Please eat dinner BEFORE you return. The Senior Night recognition will be held BEFORE the game. Seniors should be lined up by 6:15pm, at the football field; therefore, the band will go to the field earlier than normal. It is very important that everyone arrive on time at 5:00pm. The band WILL BE PERFORMING THE HALFTIME SHOW ON THE FIELD. All marching band supporters are encouraged to come out and enjoy our last performance of the 2011 competition show. The Trojan Vanguard will be participating in the USSBA Central Virginia Regional this Saturday. We meet at 10:00am for practice at the HS, lunch is provided by the boosters, pack the trailer, and then travel to Liberty University at approximately 2:30-3:00pm. We perform at 7:30pm and the awards are at 8:45. We should be home around midnight or earlier, depending on when we can pack.

Please dress for cold weather Saturday night. I have entirely too many students showing up in tee shirts, shorts, and no coat. DRESS FOR COLD WEATHER. Everyone will need $$ for dinner at the stadium. Please plan to travel with us to our final show and help push equipment to the field. LIBERTY OFFERS NO TRAILERS FOR EQUIPMENT. It all goes in under “Trojan Power” so PLEASE help.

There are a number of people who have still not taken care of their marching band fee. Please take care of this asap. We still have two more performances after this weekend. We have home games on Oct. 28 and Nov. 4. Practices after this weekend will be Mondays and Thursdays ONLY, from 3:30-6:00pm. NO 7AM MORNINGS AFTER THIS WEEKEND.

The Trojan Vanguard will be participating in the Bassett Band Contest this Saturday. We meet at 9:00am, pack and hit the road. We perform at 1:00pm and the contest continues until awards time at 4:30pm. If we finish first in our class, then we are invited to compete in Finals beginning at 7:00pm We should be home by approximately 11:00pm. If we do not make finals, then we will be home around 6:30pm.

Please dress for cold weather Saturday night. Everyone will need $$ for lunch and dinner at the stadium. Bassett always has great food. I hope that everyone plans to travel with us. It is great fun! Please plan on helping push equipment in and out of the stadium---it's a hike to the field!!! Thanks!

Homecoming is Friday night, Oct. 7. The band will perform at the Pep Rally at 2pm during the school day, then stay for practice after school. The boosters will provide dinner for the students. We will play in the stands after the homecoming festivities. After the game we will pack the keyboards then head for home. See you tomorrow!

Directions to Bassett High School:

Address- 85 Riverside Drive, Bassett VA, 24055

From the North: 220 South to Exit 57A (says Bassett). Turn RIGHT at the end of the ramp and go 1 mile. Bassett High School will be on the left.

From the South: 220 North to Martinsville. Take the 220 North Bypass towards Roanoke. Travel on the bypass for about 10 minutes and take the 57A Exit to Bassett. Turn left at the top of the ramp and go 1 mile. The school is on the left.

From Lynchburg: 29 South to Rt. 40 (to Rocky Mt). Then take 220 South to Exit 57A (says Bassett). Turn RIGHT at the end of the ramp and go 1 mile. Bassett High School will be on the left.

From Grayson County: Rt. 58 through Hillsville. You will go over Lovers Leap and continue to the bottom of the mountain. You will then take Rt. 8 (left) and stay on that for 5-7 miles. You will then take Rt. 57 to Bassett (right). Stay straight for 25 minutes. You will go through 3 red lights and turn into the high school at the 4^th light. (School is on the right)

The annual Music Awards Banquet will be held at Mt. Hermon Courtyard Conference Center on Franklin Turnpike (Route 41—former Mt. Hermon Elem. School). The menu includes: Signature Chicken Tips, Beef Tips & Gravy, Roasted Potatoes, String Beans, Corn, Seven Layer Salad, Rolls, Sweet & Un-sweet Tea, Coffee, Water, and Desserts. The banquet will begin at 6:30pm.

The awards ceremony will follow the meal. Awards will be given for most improved and most outstanding members of each ensemble. Letters and bars for marching band participation and other special awards will be given. The senior awards will conclude the ceremony.

The Band Boosters are paying for each marching band member to attend the banquet. Family and friends may purchase tickets at $13.00 each. Please see Mrs. Bray to pick up your ticket and to purchase any extra tickets that you need for family and friends. Please make all checks payable to VIRGINIA HELMSMEN. Tickets must be picked up/purchased by Monday, May 9, in order to allow the caterer sufficient time to prepare for the exact number that will attend. You must have a ticket to attend---no exceptions. Once the number is called in to the caterer, no others will be added because I must pre-pay for the Conference Center. It is $13.00 to enter whether you eat or not. The price for children is the same as adults.

The Brays went to the UD and registered the kids for the competition and got the details we would need. After reviewing the practice site they discovered that they could not use it because there was no ground level access to the gym. They found another place in town to use and we practiced today from 4-8 and they practice tomorrow morning from 8-12. They are sounding really good. Took some pictures of each of the kids and you can see them below. Mrs. Brown fly in to the airport so we are one parent for each 1-1/2 kids

Tunstall High School Band Boosters is having a fundraiser at the Wendy's at 1416 Piney Forest Road, Danville VA. All you have to do is eat supper at the Piney Forest Wendy's between 5pm and 8pm on February 3rd and 20% of all proceeds will go to the Tunstall Band Boosters. These funds will help our kids go to the 2011 Percussion World Championships in Dayton Ohio. We have taken the Bronze medal for the last three years in Ohio going up against huge high schools from California and other parts of the country. Parade Practice 6^th, 7^th, 8^th, & HS Bands at 3:30-4:30—wear a coat and tennis shoes to practice. Middle School students will need a bus pass to ride to the high school for practice. Please pick up all students at 4:30pm after practice at the dark grey double doors (between the cafeteria and auditorium—on the front of the building at the high school).

TCE continues until 6:30pm.

SATURDAY, December 11—DANVILLE CHRISTMAS PARADE 6:00pm

All band students 6-7-8 & HS should arrive at Tunstall HS at 4:00pm. All students that are not already in a HS uniform should wear a red sweat shirt (band shirt if you have it) and blue jeans. PLEASE---put multiple layers of clothes under these shirts and pants. It will be COLD!!!! Wear gloves, hat, etc. The parade begins at 6:00pm. We are the first band coming down the street. We will get finished early—before the parade ends. When we get to the bottom of the street, we will pack quickly and head for Chick-fil-A for dinner. PLEASE SEND $6-7 WITH YOUR CHILD FOR HIS/HER DINNER. At that point, we will return to the high school for drop off. We should be back at the HS by approximately 8:00pm. Please have someone available to pick up your child at that time.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12—GRETNA CHRISTMAS PARADE 3:00PM

All band students 6-7-8 & HS should arrive at Tunstall HS at 1:00pm. I'm sorry this may require leaving church early, but it is the only Sunday issue that we have all year long. We will leave for Gretna as soon as all band members are in uniform. The parade begins at 3:00pm. We will be on the buses and return by approximately 4:30-5:00pm. Please have someone available to pick up your child at that time at the HS.

MONDAY, DEC 13—HS & 7^th & 8^th GRADE REHEARSAL AT HS 3:30-5:00

ALL 7^TH-8^TH & HS students are expected to attend practice for the Tuesday night performance. It will be a dress rehearsal (do not wear your concert clothes). We will be running lights, etc., top to bottom. Please have a ride promptly at 5:00pm

TUESDAY, DEC 14—HS & 7^th & 8^th Gr. PUBLIC CONCERT AT HS 7:00PM

Warm ups begins for students at 6:15pm. All students should be there for warm ups. The auditorium will open for seating at 6:45pm. The concert is free to the public. Please invite your family and friends!!! It will be awesome.

Coupon Card Problem

Apparently, Ham's has been sold to a restaurant owner in Greensboro. The new owner has stopped honoring all coupons and cards that the local management issued. We spoke to the manager today and he was very apologetic. He had tried to discuss it with the new owner but apparently the owner thought they were "losing" too much money on "coupons". The new owner has actually stopped all of the Ham's he bought from issuing coupons and told them to refuse all of them. We did verify they weren't singling out Tunstall. They have turned away all kinds of cards from different schools, the colleges, and other groups. Many of them they had just renewed this summer.

The summer marching band practice schedule is posted on the website. It was e-mailed to all band members and also mailed to each household. We start practice this Thursday, July 8, from 9am until noon. Bring your hat and sunscreen. We will meet in the band room. For new members, enter through the double doors on the front of the building that are on the left side of the cafeteria (large glass structure closest to football field). Everyone should bring your instrument and wear tennis shoes.

It is going to be hot and we will be outside part of this time. Please bring a jug of water for your personal use. We cannot go running through the halls because the staff is currently waxing on our end of the building. Come prepared! See you Thursday.

Hope everyone had a great holiday! It's that time of year again---indoor is starting this week. As we speak, Jim Wunderlick is writing our show. It will feature THREE DRUM SETS! It will be written in the style of Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Sounds cool, doesn't it??? It will be awesome!!!!

Please take into personal consideration the fact that there will be NO middle school ensemble this year. So, if you want to perform, you must be in the high school ensemble. This weeks schedule will be Monday, 3:30-5:30 (bring coat to move equipment outside), Tuesday and Thursday, 3:30-6:30 pm. All rehearsals will be on the THS stage. Our end of the building is currently under demolition and construction. This makes all rehearsals a challenge-----BUT---you know that we always rise to the occasion. We should be back in our new room around the end of February---right around crunch time for us!

Please let me know if you are planning to play--e-mail is great. Arrangements must be made on lots of different levels. Motel rooms, buses, food, it all has to be laid out and your participation is important. Hope to hear from you soon. See you tomorrow! db

Congratulations are in order for several former band members and band parents! "Claire Nicole Hardy" was born last week to former band member, Rachel Yeatts Hardy and husband Chris. Claire was very early but is doing great! She hopes to be home to watch the new years football games with Daddy Chris.

Congratulation also go out to former band parents, Jerry & Jennie Finney. Their twin grandsons were born this morning to their son Jeremy and Emily Blalock Finney. Emily is the daughter of Dennis (former THS teacher) and Cathy Blalock. They were also rather early but are doing well. Congratulations to each of these families and we will keep you in our prayers. Looks like Santa has some more shopping to do! db

GRETNA PARADE--NOT ATTENDING

Due to the rain, we will NOT be attending the Gretna Parade today. I have not heard anything yet about canceling the actual parade, but I do not feel that we can attend in this weather. Woodwind instruments pads fall out when exposed to rain and wool band jackets do not fair well in it either. Nor do I wish to expose our students to severe wet weather. Therefore, it is in our best interest not to attend.

Thanks to everyone that attended the Danville parade yesterday. It is already being played on the local Danville t.v. station. db

I want to encourage ALL marching band members to be at school at 6:00pm Tuesday night to attend the Pittsylvania County School Board recognition meeting. The bus will leave at that time. The meeting begins at 7:00pm. We should be finished there by 7:30 and on to Bojangles for dinner. Be sure to bring $$ for dinner. We will be back at school approx. 8:30pm. Parents are encouraged to be there also. Each student will receive a CERTIFICATE of recognition from the board. Students should wear their band tee shirts and nice pants. This is a very big honor for us and your participation is expected.

Please remember that the Music Department Christmas Concert will be held Thursday night at 7:00pm. This concert will feature the high school and middle school students. It will be held at the middle school due to construction. The concert is free. Come join in the celebration of the holidays!

The Danville Parade is Saturday, Dec. 12 at 6:00pm and the Gretna Parade is Sunday, Dec. 13 at 3:00pm. All band members are expected to complete their marching band obligation with us at these two events. Our public image depends on you. Each band member will be bringing home their band jacket after the parade to be cleaned and returned to school by the end of first semester. Please take care of this matter promptly. Only the jacket can be cleaned (no sashes or pants). Thanks for helping us out with this matter. Have a great week! db

We have a two week blitz of holiday events and then a week to breathe before school is out for the holidays. Please check this calendar carefully. We basically rehearse for one week and perform for one week---and it's over. All members are expected to be at every rehearsal. Due to construction restraints, the Annual Holiday Concert will be held at TMS this year on Thursday, December 10, at 7:00pm. All of these events are listed on the band website at www.tunstallmusic.blogspot.com.

The 2009 USSBA State Champion Trojan Vanguard will be recognized at the Pittsylvania County School Board meeting on Tuesday night, December 8, at 7:00pm. We should be at the beginning of the meeting. The students will travel by bus to the meeting at 6pm. All of our band parents are encouraged to attend the meeting in support of our accomplishment. Students are to wear band tee shirts. Drum majors will be in full uniform to accept the award. In case you missed it, our picture with the trophy and banner was in the Star Tribune that came out over Thanksgiving!

As most of you heard tonight, our rooming situation in MD has changed a bit. The band will be staying at the Springhill Suites Marriott along with six rooms of chaperones. The other six rooms of chaperones will be staying at the Courtyard Marriott Annapolis---one mile away. There was a very big mix up at the motel and this is the only resolution to the problem. All students should arrive at 7:30am on Thursday morning. The bus departs at 8:00am. We will stop in South Boston at Bojangles for food. Next stop will be around Richmond, probably the great Arby's that we all love so much. Last stop will be MD. We will look for a place to play for an hour or two that afternoon. I am feeding the band pizzas for dinner at the motel, my treat.

Friday morning, breakfast at the motel, no charge. Competition time is 11:15am. I am feeding the band and parents sandwiches, etc. at the stadium. Awards around 2:45. We will remain to watch some of the Division 2 bands, weather permitting. Dinner that evening will be at a local mall (security permitting), otherwise, it will just be dinner at a local restaurant.

Saturday morning we pack our bags and depart for the National Museum for American History at the Smithsonian Institution---lots to see to keep everyone interested!!! There is no charge for admission. Lunch will be inside the Smithsonian. Word has it that even the fastest "fast food" is in the $10-$15 range. Be prepared. Around 2:00pm we will leave for sightseeing, hopefully the WWII Memorial. If weather is permitting, we will go back to the stadium to watch some of the larger bands. Dinner will be in the area. If not, then we head to Danville. Once we head towards Danville, I will try to put up a post on the website with the approximate time of arrival back at THS. It will be late.

Please make sure that your child has enough $$ for food. Invariably, someone sends a child off on one of these trip with $20 in their pocket. It is sad to think, but it happens. There will be souvenirs, etc. Please warn your student about conserving money during the trip. They tend to think that if they don't have to spend much the first two days, that they are "home free." Saturday will cost you some money for food. Please convince them to save the bulk of their money for then.

Thursday--2 fast food meals

Friday--mall meal or local restaurant

Saturday--Smithsonian lunch, Stadium dinner (both pricey locations)

Please also warn your student about leaving personal items, wallet, money, etc., on the bus and other unattended areas. They are very trusting souls. Unfortunately, everyone else in these areas may not be.

I expect the utmost responsibility shown from each student. We are staying in an extremely nice motel, and we must act accordingly. There will be times to be somewhere. You are expected to be there. You will follow all rules set forth, no matter whether you agree with them or not. They are for your own safety. Each student will be assigned an "adopted mom or dad" for the duration. They must know your whereabouts at all times. Only Mr. & Mrs. Bray may allow any deviation from the announced rules. When in doubt, ask one of them. You will remain in your group while touring in DC and while in the stadium. The band will sit together at all times. If you deviate from this, you could find yourself with a chaperone in your room, for keeps!

We will have a safe, hopefully happy, journey this week. Take advantage of the wonderful things we are about to witness. Don't spoil it for yourself. Be on time, every time.....yes, parents too please. I must have hall supervision at night. A rotating schedule will be worked out so that no one is burdened. Everyone is expected to participate. STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS--SALEM--OCT. 31

This is a reminder that State Championships are this Saturday, in Salem. Tickets are $12 per seat. I have a minimum number of tickets that we must purchase or else we have to buy them. I have only sold ten out of the 30 . Surely, more folks than that are going to watch us attempt another STATE CHAMPIONSHIP !!!!! Our score last Saturday was one tenth of a point behind LCA. Out of the five bands that will be in our class at nationals, we are at the head of the pack---right behind LCA. We checked the scores for each of the other bands---and it is ours---if we want it badly enough. We plan to have an EXCELLENT day this Saturday. Practice was great yesterday. Please buy your tickets so we do not have to lose this money. We need your support.

Saturday arrival time is 9:00am. Lunch is at 11:00 and we depart at 11:30. Performance time is 3:14pm. Awards are approx. 9:00pm. Hopefully we will be home 11:30-12:00midnight.

NATIONALS---NOV 5-7

Tickets for nationals are $20 if you want to purchase them before you get there. I have no required minimum for that show. All trip funds for students should be received no later than Thursday of this week in order to insure I have time to make deposits and secure payment for the bus and motel. If there are any issues, please see me asap. I sent home Pizza brochures to help students with their fundraising, last week. All of your profit goes directly to the cost of your trip. Please be sure that those are turned in on Thursday also. If they arrive any later than Thursday, you will not be able to use those funds for this trip.

SENIOR NIGHT--FRIDAY--OCT 30

Senior night is this Friday. Seniors will be announced BEFORE the game. We will be performing our show, in its entirity, during halftime. Please come out and support us. Senior parents were sent a letter that you use to get in the gate free. Your senior should also have submitted a form with their individual stats for the AP to read as they are introduced.

Looks like we may actually get to be outside today for practice, so we will run until 6:30. Please make every effort to attend.

The marching band has taken a back seat to every other obligation that many of our students have involved themselves in this year. We have gotten nowhere this week because we are averaging 6-8 members absent each day-----NOT DUE TO SICKNESS, but every other thing imaginable. We only have two weeks left in the entire season. With sporadic attendance being the norm, it is frustrating to even imagine going to a national competition in just two short weeks. The show is complete, but we still have students that have not marched the closer---not even one step. I ask you this, how many football players leave practice early for work, dance, hair cuts, "my parent says I can't come today", etc.? Volleyball? Cross Country? None. It is all a matter of priorities. Your education must be your first priority. After that, you make the list. I always taught my children to finish what you start, to the best of your ability. It is not ok to slack off for any reason. It is my hope that you might follow the same philosophy for the next two weeks---for the sake of finishing out the season on a good note. Accolades follow those who work for them. db

Liberty University/Trojan Invitational

The Liberty University Band Competition will begin at 4:00pm. Our performance time is 4:30pm. We will arrive at Tunstall at 9;00am. Lunch will be provided by the boosters. Kelly could use some help with serving lunch---she did it all by herself last week. Please let me know if you can help with lunch. Departure time will be announced later in the week. Admission for the contest is $10.00 per person (whether you watch the entire show or just one band).

I would like to say a word of thanks to the volunteers who ran the Trojan Invitational Band Aid Concert. Without your effort, it would not have been possible. The music was great and the food, excellent. Fried oreos are our newest best friend!!! A hearty round of applause goes to Randy Owens for single handedly building our new reviewing stand on the practice field. Wonderful job!

To be very honest, I would have hoped that more parents would have taken an interest in the event and in their child. Our superintendent spent an hour watching us practice Saturday night. What support!!! No one has a busier schedule than myself. I work 6-7 days, every week, getting home after 8pm every night---and my children have long sense left this music program. I'm there for your child. Why aren't you? We only have three weeks left in our season. Let's make the effort---for their sakes.

We are not attending the Ledford show. Congratulations to the Colorguard and Drumline for placing first in Class A at the GW Competition. Congratulations also to the band for tying for 3rd place in Class A. In addition, the colorguard and drumline were also 3RD OVERALL FOR THE ENTIRE DAY at GW out of 23 bands. Cudos to the guard and drums!

I just received the schedule for the Bassett show on Oct. 10th. The show begins at 5:00pm. Our performance is 5:45pm. Awards are at 7:50pm. Departure times will be sent out next week.

We will practice this Friday from 1:30 to 5:30pm. School dismisses at 1:00pm due to the end of the six weeks. We will also practice Saturday from 9:00am to 1:00pm. All members are expected to be in attendance. Sickness has taken a large toll on our organization and we are in need of "catching up" to the rest of the world. Please make every effort to see that your member is here.

FYI, we normally stop rehearsal at 6:30pm and THEN equipment must be pushed back onto the stage area. All members are required to help with this task. At that time, everyone will be dismissed to leave. You may want to give them a few minutes ---so you don't have to wait so long. Thanks for your patience! db

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Morning Practices for Drumline Start Thursday, Sept 24 at 7am

Thursday--Practice 3:30-6:30pm, entire band, no absences.

Friday--NO PRACTICE, get some rest, do your homework.

Saturday--Arrive at 9:00am, bring a bag lunch. We will practice, pack, and leave for GW by approx. 12:30pm. I need a couple of adults to ride the second bus. E-mail me.

Pit Crew--ALL PARENTS are reminded that we must move our own equipment to and from the field at GW. Your assistance is very much needed.

Travel Permits--new travel permits are coming home Thursday. Please send it back to me on Friday. No permit/no travel.

Socks--all hornline and drumline MUST wear LONG black socks with their uniform pants. The short tennis shoe socks are unacceptable. Guard must have nude tights.

Performance Time--2:45pm----contest begins at 1:00pm

Awards for A & AA--5:45pm, we will be coming home and unpacking the trailer after awards. All members are expected to help with this duty.

September 30 is the deadline for Program Ads for the Trojan Invitational. We are way behind, please help us raise the funds to put on this event.

Well Good Afternoon and hello from the Nutter Center in Dayton Ohio. Our kids have been practicing in the parking lot since 11am this morning and are very excited about the competition. Everyone is very nervous but the music is even better than what we heard at the parent show last Friday. At 2pm we wheeled the equipment into the Nutter Center and set up for the performance. The TCE did a wonderful job and one of the judges was overheard saying, "that was extraordinary". The score for TCE in preliminary rounds was a 91 which puts us in third place. We hope to pull that up tomorrow to a gold medal score, I will keep you informed. The kids are coming back to the hotel to eat pizza and then tonight they are performing an exhibition concert at a local high school. This will be great fun for them and they are all looking forward to it. Stay tuned tomorrow night for the results from the finals, it will be posted around midnight.

Updates from Dayton

Hi folks, we are here in Dayton and getting started on our first practice. An elementary school here was kind enough to let us use their gym for practice which is great since it is misting rain outside. The kids have rested all day today and are now restless and want to get to work. This morning all the girls went to the Thrift Store next to the place we are staying and caught a clothing sale. I think they all purchased some type of clothing, even my two ladies. Tomorrow will be another day of practice and pre-lims are tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow night we play an exhibition for a local High School. Wish us luck and check out the pictures at left.

Please remember that all Pittsylvania County school rules apply while on band trips, for the duration. Should you decide to break them, disciplinary action will result. I currently have 16 rooms reserved for Saturday, March 28, AIA Championships. The families listed below have requested a room. If you have changed your mind, please let me know. I have 2 rooms left at this time that are available. All rooms must be paid for by Friday, March 13, after the family show. If anyone else would like a room, notify me immediately. I can add to the reservation, but must do so by this Friday. All students are housed in rooms of four. Their motel cost is included in the participation fee. After Friday, I will let go all extra rooms.

Don't forget the Cover Dish Dinner this Friday night at 6:00pm with the "Family Show" to follow at 7pm. Each family is asked to provide enough food to feed your family. Don't forget drinks too! We will pack the truck immediately after the show. Everyone should arrive at 5:00am to depart for Powhatan HS on Saturday morning.

Also, I must know who needs a room for Dayton---and what nights---Tuesday through Sunday, April 14-19. Dayton rooms are $60 per room, per night. We depart at 8:00am on Tuesday the 14th of April.

I've recently put up the 2008 field show on YouTube and a clip video that I've made using footage from the last 3 invitationals. Please feel free to share these with people by putting them on the site and sending out emails. The clip video turned out pretty awesome and I figured it would be like a gift to the band.

I recommend that you watch these in "high quality" by pressing the button in the bottom right of the view screen. It makes a BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!

I just wanted to say THANK YOU to Deanna Taylor and all who worked the concessions and sold souvenirs last night. We had an unexpected busy night and everyone did a great job. We also started a new venue last night, face painting (thanks Teresa). We had twenty kids get their face painted last night, I see this becoming a popular venue at the games. Again, GREAT JOB GUYS and GALS.
